Expert Dermatology Care at UCF Health

UCF Health continues to expand its care in Central Florida with new dermatology services. By integrating specialty and primary care under one roof, the College of Medicine’s physician practice provides patients with an array of services by a team of providers focused on comprehensive care.

Included in its dermatology services is medical dermatology and cosmetic dermatology, and UCF Health will soon add Mohs surgery – a state-of-the-art treatment for skin cancer. Dr. David Weinstein, the dermatologist at UCF Health, is one of the few physicians in Central Florida with Mohs fellowship training. This enhanced knowledge and experience allows him to offer patients a variety of solutions for their skin concerns.

“I like to provide my patients with all their options,” Dr. Weinstein says. “By offering a variety of services in-house, we are able to effectively treat the vast majority of patients’ skin concerns.”

Cosmetic Dermatology Expertise

When it comes to any cosmetic procedure, you should assess the experience and education of the person performing the service. Despite new technological advances, your results and risk depend on the provider’s skill and training. That’s why only qualified physicians perform all procedures at UCF Health.

UCF Health practices evidence-based medicine. All the services offered have been proven effective, so patients don’t waste money on services that turn out to be empty promises. Cosmetic services available at UCF Health include laser skin treatments, fillers, and botulinum toxin and chemical peels, among others.

With most cosmetic skin concerns, there are usually a variety of treatment options, Dr. Weinstein explains. “By talking with your physician, you should feel informed and never pressured about all the treatment options available to you,” he says.

Top-Level Treatment for Skin Cancer

Mohs surgery is the most effective treatment available for both basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. It has the lowest recurrence rates, highest cure rates and best cosmetic results of any skin cancer treatment.

Since sun and UV exposure are the greatest risk factors for these cancers, it’s not surprising that 80 percent of these cancer cases occur on the face and neck areas, places that most people want to avoid scarring. With Mohs surgery, only the affected skin is removed. This preserves the greatest amount of healthy skin and provides a better cosmetic outcome. It is an outpatient procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. Patients leave that day knowing they are cancer free.

While any board-certified dermatologist may perform Mohs surgery, only members of the American College of Mohs Surgery have completed an extensive fellowship with at least one full year of hands-on training in Mohs surgery after completing their residency. Dr. Weinstein did his fellowship training at Good Samaritan Trihealth in Cincinnati.

UCF Health is currently expanding its Medical City office in Lake Nona with a new Mohs center, which will be opening this fall. The new suite will also include expanded office space for dermatology services.

“With any cancer, patients want and deserve the most effective treatment,” Dr. Weinstein says. “By providing Mohs surgery, our level of cancer care aligns with the expectations of our patients when they come to Medical City.”
