Meals on Wheels Ignites Important Action for Hungry Osceola Seniors

In Osceola County, the March for Meals St. Patrick’s 5K Run & Walk, powered by KUA, is a community’s pledge to its elderly members. This initiative, slated for March 16, 2024, at Kissimmee Lakefront Park, champions the Meals on Wheels Osceola program, aiming to eradicate senior hunger.

Originating in 1971, the Osceola Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels began as a senior-led initiative to aid homebound peers. Now serving over 545 clients, the program’s expansion underscores the escalating demand for such services. Despite its growth, challenges like an expanding waitlist and funding shortages highlight the urgent need for community backing. Tim Timmermann, Senior VP of Marketing & Development, emphasizes, “Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal; it’s a crucial check-in for our seniors, making community involvement essential.”

The 5K event promises a blend of fitness, fun and philanthropy, featuring a silent auction and a “Team Challenge” where groups vie for  “Most Spirited Team” and “Largest Team” awards, incentivized by a discount for teams of five or more. Attendees are urged to donate non-perishable food items, aiding the Osceola Council on Aging’s food pantry and entering them into a prize draw.

Meals on Wheels Osceola exemplifies the profound impact of collective action, fostering independence and dignity for the elderly. Covering 33 routes in Osceola County, the program ensures that nutritious meals, crafted by dieticians and chefs, reach those in need, including pet provisions through “Jimmy’s Pets.”

As the March for Meals 5K approaches, it’s a chance to support a vital cause, ensuring Osceola’s seniors receive the care and nourishment they deserve. So lace up your sneakers, gather your team, and let’s march for meals.
