EPCOT Honors America’s Veterans with ‘Portraits of Courage’ Exhibit

EPCOT’s latest exhibit, “Portraits of Courage: A Commander’s Tribute to America’s Warriors,” offers veterans and visitors alike a deeply moving experience. Unveiled in the American Heritage Gallery, this powerful collection features over 60 full-color portraits painted by former President George W. Bush. Each portrait captures the likeness of service members and veterans who have served with distinction since 9/11.

This year-long exhibit is a testament to President Bush’s unwavering dedication to the veteran community, forged through his personal relationships with these individuals. Following his presidency, Bush has spent considerable time connecting with the men and women who served under his leadership. “Portraits of Courage” reflects these bonds and is part of the broader mission of the Bush Institute’s Veterans and Military Families program, which works tirelessly to honor and support those who have served.

As you explore the exhibit, you’ll find the artwork thoughtfully displayed throughout the rotunda, creating a serene space for reflection on the bravery and resilience of these military heroes. The neighboring “Creating Tradition: Innovation and Change in American Indian Art” exhibit remains unchanged, allowing guests to continue their journey through the diverse narratives of American history and culture.

For veterans, military personnel, and their loved ones, these paintings may evoke personal connections. Each portrait is more than just an artistic rendering; it’s accompanied by a story, penned by President Bush himself, that delves into the lives of the veterans depicted. These narratives highlight their courage on the battlefield, their struggles and triumphs in recovery, and their ongoing contributions in civilian life. The exhibit offers a powerful glimpse into the strength and resilience of the human spirit, making it an essential experience for anyone who values the sacrifices made by America’s veterans.

This exhibit brought back vivid memories of my own time in the Army, particularly the post-9/11 era, and the battles many of our troops continue to face long after their service. On a lighter note, it also reminded me of my first visit to Disney World and the enduring support Disney has shown to the military. While still serving in the Army, we made the journey from Northern Virginia to Disney World in an Army van, staying at Shades of Green—a trip made possible by Disney’s generosity. That memory, coupled with the profound impact of this exhibit, underscores Disney’s ongoing commitment to those who serve.

I’ve taken some pictures, but they simply don’t do the exhibit justice. I have taken many of the photos from far away hoping it will motivate you to visit. No photo or write-up can fully capture the depth and emotion of “Portraits of Courage.” This is an exhibit that must be visited in person to truly appreciate its significance and the stories it tells. “Portraits of Courage” is more than just an art exhibit; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who have served their country with honor and distinction. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with and appreciate the stories of these remarkable individuals.
