For classic movie buffs, Billy Wilder’s 1959 film, “Some Like It Hot” is a tour de force featuring the brilliant Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. The Tony and Grammy Award-winning Broadway musical based on the movie is now playing at The Walt Disney Theater at Dr. Phillips Center.
While it’s tough to top Billy Wilder, the musical team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, creators of “Hairspray” along with the book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin, have re-imagined this classic black and white film in full technicolor, while maintaining the original film’s comedic genius and spirit.
Set in the Prohibition era, this fast-paced comedy follows two musicians who take up new identities and go on the run after witnessing a mob hit. Their cross-country journey brings them face to face with a dazzling singer with dreams of stardom, who captures one of their hearts, while the other catches the eye of a wealthy suitor set on finding true love. Still under disguise, they must untangle their messes and stay alive from the gangsters hot on their tail.
“Some Like It Hot” is an explosion of gin-joint musical numbers and riotous choreography, with sparkling performances from a stellar cast. Matt Loehr and Tavis Kordell as Joe/Josephine and Jerry/Daphne command the stage from the time their tap shoes hit the stage to the heartfelt curtain call. Leandra Ellis-Gaston is a mesmerizing Sugar with a show-stopping voice.
While honoring the original Wilder classic, the show adds a progressive and modern twist, while capturing the flavor of the era. “Some Like It Hot” is guaranteed to please the most persnickety theatergoer. And to experience the show at the fabulous Dr. Phillips Center, decked out in its finest holiday glory, is a perfect way to experience some holiday magic.
