Building Bridges for Brighter Futures

The Bridges of Light Foundation (BOL) began as a two-woman team in 2004 to raise funds and draw attention to the needs of children within the Central Florida foster care system. Over the past 10 years, the heart and purpose of the BOL mission has remained strong and effective, as the organization has grown to include at-risk children within the Orange County Public School System.

BOL believes that three crucial needs must be met in order for a child to be able to succeed: nurturing, guidance and education. For many children in the Central Florida community, there is at least one, or more, piece of this trio missing due extenuating circumstance (family issues, poverty, etc). This is where BOL steps in. The foundation has implemented a two-prong approach in finding a way to fill the gaps for children who need it most.

Nurturing: Children cannot learn without basic life necessities. The BOL ‘closets of care’ offer clothing, food, and other supplies to take home.

Mentoring: Success is met by building confidence and life skills critical to development. Mentorship fosters positive relationships between young adults and their role models by providing this support.
Tutoring: Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” BOL stands behind that philosophy by offering a one-on-one tutoring program designed to provide after school support for children who are struggling academically.

With the programs currently flourishing at two locations – Great Oaks Village (local foster care facility) and Carver Middle School – BOL continues to see its mission at work. Through improved grade point averages, healthy life skills and attitudes, and opportunity for long term success, it’s clear that the children impacted by BOL have discovered a new hope for their futures.

How You Can Help:

1. Give time. Motivated, compassionate volunteers are an invaluable part of the organization.
2. Give money. There is still work to be done in the community. Every dollar helps provide a gift of education and mentorship.
3. Give hope. Spread awareness, become a mentor, attend an event – your involvement helps bring light and hope to a child’s future.
