Saturday morning’s first round of the men’s 100 meter in the Rio Olympics saw all three United States competitors, including an Orlando native, qualify for the semifinal round.
Boone High School graduate and former Florida State Seminole Marvin Bracy finished third in heat one behind Kemarley Brown of Bahrain and Chijindu Ujah of Great Britain with a finishing time of 10.16s. The top two runners in each of the three heats advanced to the semifinals automatically.
United States runners Justin Gatlin and Trayvon Brommel finished first with 10.01s and second with 10.13s respectively in their heats to qualify for the semifinal round. Bracy qualified on time because he was one of the next eight fastest runners.
Bracy first started running track and field while attending BHS and says that representing the U.S. at the Olympic Games has always been the goal of his track and field career. Injuries prevented him from reaching his full potential during the 2012 Olympic Trials in London, but he has been preparing for his first Olympic Games in Rio ever since.
Watch Bracy and his U.S. teammates compete in the men’s 100 meter semifinal round Sunday, Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. He is scheduled to race in the first heat. The final round will take place later that night.
