Beneath the Mask: Dr. Steppie Shares How to Care for Your Skin

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the professional and personal lives of many have been turned upside down. The levels of increased anxiety being experienced can have a dramatic effect on overall well-being. Though it may not be thought of initially, one of the consequences of all this stress is poor skin health.

During the pandemic, the area around the eyes has gained attention. While it’s been said that the eyes are the window to the soul and can communicate various emotions, this area is also particularly susceptible to damage like wrinkles, dehydration lines, puffiness and other visible signs of aging. Now, masks have made the eyes the focal point.

Because the skin around the eyes is thinner than the rest of the face and more delicate, it can damage easily. The skin needs proper treatment and time to regroup and rejuvenate.

Also keep in mind that something as simple as the laundry detergent you use can have consequences on your skin. If the area beneath your mask becomes irritated,
it’s a good indicator that the brand of detergent you’re using is the root of your problem — not the mask itself.

To help with skin irritation and the dreaded “maskne,” wash your face thoroughly and apply a small layer of oil-free moisturizer before wearing your mask. Women should also avoid applying heavy makeup that can clog pores and cause breakouts beneath it.

When you have issues with your skin, it’s important to consult with a professional to find the root cause of the problem. My team and I have had the pleasure of helping countless patients pinpoint the causes of their issues, clear their skin and retain their confidence. Our practice gives patients their best chance for a proper diagnosis and an individualized treatment plan while keeping their safety in mind with strict sanitizing guidelines.

Convenience of care is another focus at our practice. We have introduced a new paperless and contactless option for check-in and payments. Patients can now submit their information from the comfort of home with their cell phone.

No matter what your skincare needs are, the dedicated providers at Associates
in Dermatology can assist you with any concern, including clinical questions and cosmetic services that will help you put your best face forward in 2021.
