The Mustache Movement: Florida’s Most Popular Styles

Florida is home to a vibrant array of facial hair styles, but recent research has spotlighted one look reigning supreme: the Beardstache. According to an analysis conducted by the barbershop Ruffians, the Beardstache leads with an impressive 7,078 average monthly searches, making it the most sought-after mustache style in the Sunshine State.

The Beardstache: A Bold Combination

The Beardstache, a blend of a beard (either full or stubbly) and a longer mustache—often resembling styles like the Walrus or Chevron—has captured the attention of many. This style allows for creative expression, with some wearers opting for distinct separation between the mustache and beard, while others seamlessly blend the two. The Beardstache has been popularized by celebrities such as Henry Cavill and Jon Hamm, who embody the rugged yet refined aesthetic it offers.

Rising Stars: Goatee and Chevron

Following the Beardstache are the Goatee and Chevron mustaches, with 865 and 518 average monthly searches, respectively.

The Goatee, a style characterized by a small, pointed beard that covers the upper lip and chin, has seen a resurgence in popularity. This versatile look can range from a simple chin tuft to a more circular formation, connecting the hair on the chin and upper lip. Well-known figures like Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith have frequently embraced this style, making it a staple in men’s grooming.

In third place, the Chevron mustache is a full, thick style that angles downwards at the corners of the mouth. Its name derives from its resemblance to the Chevron logo, an upside-down V. This iconic look was famously worn by Freddie Mercury, the legendary frontman of Queen, solidifying its place in mustache history.

Other Notable Styles

The Horseshoe mustache, coming in fourth with 389 average monthly searches, is known for its boldness. Made popular by wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, this style features a full mustache on the upper lip with vertical extensions that stretch down the sides of the mouth, resembling the shape of a horseshoe.

Finally, the Walrus mustache rounds out the top five, attracting 385 average monthly searches. This thick, bushy style often droops over the lips and has been sported by famous figures like John Lennon and President Theodore Roosevelt. Its name is derived from the whiskers of a walrus, perfectly capturing its essence.

“The mustache has been a statement of facial hair for centuries, evolving into many different styles and names. It has long been seen as a symbol of masculinity and power, and, for certain styles, a bold, unforgettable statement look,” Robyn Mulgrew, store manager at Ruffian said.

Mulgrew said people opt for mustaches for various reasons, from self-expression to cultural connection. However, she emphasizes the commitment required to maintain these styles:

“Maintaining a mustache isn’t effortless, especially if it’s a more distinctive look. A mustache requires trims, a good shampoo and conditioner, and a good comb daily to avoid tangling, especially for longer or bushier styles.”

Investing in quality grooming tools and products is crucial for keeping a mustache looking its best.

As Florida continues to embrace facial hair trends, the popularity of the Beardstache and its counterparts speaks to a growing movement in self-expression and personal style. Whether for cultural reasons, to emulate a favorite celebrity, or simply to stand out, mustaches are more than just facial hair—they’re a statement of identity.
