Walden: A Different Kind of School

Over 16 years of evolution, our purpose transcends intellectual pursuits and academic achievement. We are a community of learners dedicated to educating the whole person. We challenge students to develop academics, social-emotional skills, and creative capacities in a collaborative and supportive setting, enabling them to take ownership of their education and reach their highest potential.

What We Do

We understand and respect different ways of learning and honor each student’s uniqueness and innate ability to be inquisitive and creative. We ensure that each child has a role and feels a sense of belonging and responsibility in our community.

What Sets Us Apart

Walden offers a best-of practice combination of Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Classical, Harvard’s Project Zero and Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Our curriculum is inspired by the Finnish education system that is consistently rated one of the top systems in the world. How do we implement such an ideological approach?

We hand-craft our curriculum to meet academic and developmental benchmarks, using different modalities to inspire and engage various types of learners. We focus on concept-based learning and use essential questions and hands-on projects to teach students how to link information and discover meaningful connections between ideas.

We maintain small class sizes and low teacher-to-student ratios, using multi-age, mixed-grade classes to best support students’ differing levels of learning. By working with the same students for several consecutive years, our teachers become familiar and recognize each child’s capabilities, challenges and aspirations. Being able to adjust teaching styles to meet each child’s needs provides our students with greater opportunities for success.
