A new musical comedy about the things we do to stay together.
Everyone’s favorite Scottish nanny is headed to Orlando in an internationally acclaimed new hit musical. Based on the beloved film starring Robin Williams and Sally Field, “Mrs. Doubtfire” tells the hysterical and heartfelt story of an out-of-work actor who will do anything for his kids.
The Broadway production directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, opened December 5, 2021, and closed May 29, 2022. Stepping into Robin William’s shoes as Daniel Hillard is two-time Tony nominee Rob McClure (nominated for Chaplin and for Mrs. Doubtfire) alongside co-star and his wife offstage, Maggie Lakis as Miranda Hillard (Avenue Q and Something Rotten!).
The reviews for the national tour have been glowing with critics calling the production “wonderful, heart-warming, and laugh-out-loud funny” (Manchester Evening News) and “a feel-good, family-friendly comedy that delivers” (The Hollywood Reporter). It’s “the lovable, big-hearted musical comedy we need right now,” raves the Chicago Tribune—one that proves we’re better together.
There are several local ties to this cast, including Lannie Rubio, a Florida native and Florida State University graduate. Lannie is a member of the ensemble and understudy for Miranda. We caught up with Lannie while the show was in Fort Lauderdale to talk about “Mrs. Doubtfire,” her move to New York and what she misses the most about her home state.
Where are you from originally?
I’m originally from Miami, so it’s wonderful being here in Fort Lauderdale. I’m staying with my mom and dad while I’m in town, which has been amazing. I get to spend time with my tiny teacup yorkie, Samba, who I dropped off in Miami to enjoy the sunshine while I’m on tour.
That’s great that you get to reconnect with your family while you’re on the road. What are the top three things you miss most about Florida?
I would say the beach, for sure, and Publix. I love a Pub Sub. And probably the warmth of the sunshine. It’s so great just to walk around and not have to wear a huge coat. I’m also a big runner and it’s been nice to not have to run in the snow.
I understand. When did you move from Florida for the first time?
Right after I graduated from Florida State, I had booked an off-Broadway show. I was only in New York for about a year and then I booked this tour.
Tell us about “Mrs. Doubtfire: The New Musical Comedy.”
“Mrs. Doubtfire” is a true testament to the movie musical in terms of keeping it honest to the movie that we all know and love. It also brings about new discoveries when you add music and dance. It’s a redefinition of what it means to be a family. You can expect a lot of laughter, but there are also heartfelt moments.
And we understand you wear a lot of hats in this production.
Yes, as a member of the ensemble, I’m featured as the Flamenco singer, and I also cover Miranda. In fact, I just made my debut this past Sunday in Fort Lauderdale. My whole family got to see it.
Congratulations on your debut. What are your plans when you get to Orlando?
We’re going to hit a lot of the parks. We already have the itinerary lined up. And I’m hoping to see some of my Orlando friends.
