As thousands of golf fans make their way to golf’s most hallowed grounds this month, they’ll quickly discover the biggest secret at Augusta National Golf Club has nothing to do with the game itself, and more to do with the tournament’s popular concession stands.

For years, golf aficionados at Augusta National have made their way to the public concession stands, especially to get their hands on one of the simple, unassuming green packages, containing a revered culinary legend: the $1.50 Pimento Cheese Sandwich. These sandwiches have received iconic status among the throngs of golf fans that make the pilgrimage to the Masters every year.

Recent years have seen more than some controversy related to the quality of the sandwiches, specifically changes to the ingredients of the cheese inside. Golf fans have not been amused. You see, Augusta National patrons take their Pimento Cheese sandwiches very seriously, especially the taste and texture of the cheese that is the piece de la resistance of the sandwich.

What is the recipe?

So, what exactly goes into biggest secret at Augusta National Golf Club? No one is saying, least of all the persons who bring these culinary masterpieces to fans every year. However, they will tell you this: The secret lies in the unassuming quality of the recipe.  The cheese is simple, just like good food should be. Everyone agrees, however, that the Pimento cheese at the Augusta National simply cannot be beat.

Or perhaps, the magic of the cheese is to be found at the location. Biting into a rich pimento cheese sandwich, as you walk around the hallowed grounds of Augusta National, simply has its own magic and that, we think, is its secret.

How do I make a Masters-Style Pimento Cheese Sandwich?

You’ll need:
3 cups shredded white cheddar cheese
2 cups shredded yellow sharp cheddar cheese
4 oz crumbled blue cheese
1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
1 (4-oz) jar sliced pimentos, drained
1 cup light mayo
2 tbs Dijon mustard
1 loaf of white bread

Combine cheeses, pimentos, mayo and mustard in a food processor and process until smooth. Cover and chill. Spread on bread slices. Makes four sandwiches.
