Central Florida Medical Guide: Hillcrest Dental

medical guide

“Every time you smile at someone, it’s an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” This quote by St. Theresa of Calcutta has been an inspiration to Dr. David J. Akkara of Hillcrest Dental as he nurtured his passion for being a part of the dental profession.

Dr. Akkara earned his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience at the University of Connecticut. While there, he volunteered at the dental school, where he realized his desire to pursue a degree in dentistry. He went on to earn his dental degree at Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, which is the 2nd oldest dental school in the country, and he completed his residency at Weill Cornell Medical College and Lincoln Medical Center in New York.

Dr. Akkara’s Philosophy

Throughout his time in dental school, Dr. Akkara learned what he calls “comfort dentistry,” which helps patients feel at ease during the dental experience. Specializing in restorative dentistry, he has been practicing in Central Florida for the past 11 years, performing single and multiple tooth restorations, smile makeovers and treatments to correct clenching disorders. Additionally, procedures such as ZOOM! whitening, crowns, bridges, implants and Botox help Dr. Akkara’s patients feel confident in their smiles.

He is a member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and is affiliated with Trinon University’s implantology courses.

He credits his residency director, Gus Momudis, as being his mentor. Through his teachings, Dr. Akkara learned the importance of treating his patients as he would want to be treated. It helped shape him into the dentist he is today.

“He practiced dentistry with a gentleness I had not seen before,” Dr. Akkara says. “By his example, I learned that exceptional dental care can only be accomplished through kindness and compassion.”

Dr. Akkara chose the field of dentistry because he wanted to be a part of something bigger. He knew that to have a hand in helping people build confidence and pursue their best life he must first help them to achieve their best smile.

When he isn’t practicing dentistry, Dr. Akkara enjoys participating in Crossfit and traveling the world to explore new cities and countries.
