Orlando Health continues its efforts to address the opioid epidemic in Central Florida by expanding its Opioid Navigator Program, which connects patients in emergency departments with vital resources and treatment options for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
The program, originally launched in 2019 at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, directs patients to resources on opioid abuse and guides them toward appropriate post-discharge care, according to a news release from Orlando Health.
Expansion Supported by Settlement Funds
The program’s expansion is made possible by funds allocated to Orange County through national opioid litigation settlements. These settlements targeted companies involved in the manufacture, sale, or distribution of opioid painkillers.
With the additional funding, Orlando Health is hiring two licensed clinical social workers to serve as Opioid Navigators and two certified recovery peer specialists who will provide direct support to patients affected by opioid addiction. The program is now expanding to Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and Orlando Health Health Central Hospital, with Health Central identified as having the second-highest number of opioid-related emergency room visits within the Orlando Health system, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Addressing a Widespread Crisis
The Opioid Navigator Program was extended to several Orlando Health facilities, including Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, and South Seminole Hospital. By integrating licensed professionals and peer specialists into emergency care, the program offers patients a critical link to follow-up treatment and recovery support, disrupting the cycle of addiction and reducing the risk of fatal overdoses.
A Data-Driven Approach to Saving Lives
According to the Florida Department of Health, Orange County emergency rooms handle hundreds of nonfatal opioid overdoses each year, many of which involve repeat visits. The Opioid Navigator Program’s expansion seeks to address this issue by providing comprehensive care and resources tailored to patients’ needs.
Beyond the Navigator Program
Orlando Health’s commitment to combating the opioid epidemic extends beyond the Opioid Navigator Program. The organization actively collaborates with legislators to advocate for better mental health and substance use disorder policies across Florida. Orlando Health also works to educate healthcare providers on addiction treatment and fosters partnerships with community organizations to promote prevention and recovery.
A Holistic Response to a Community Challenge
The expansion of the Opioid Navigator Program reflects Orlando Health’s dedication to addressing the opioid crisis at multiple levels, from direct patient care to systemic advocacy. By leveraging community partnerships, data-driven strategies, and settlement funding, the program aims to provide a pathway to recovery and hope for those battling addiction.
