The University of Central Florida has been a big part of the community for more than 50 years. Residents have greatly benefited from having a growing, top-ranked research university in their own backyards.
Six years ago, UCF introduced its faculty medical practice, UCF Health, to the community and began offering high-quality healthcare from physicians who teach the next generation of doctors at the College of Medicine. The first office opened on University Boulevard, offering primary care and select specialty services. Since then, the practice has grown to include a second office location in Lake Nona, which provides 13 specialty services and will soon offer surgical services as well.
The practice focuses on providing excellent individualized patient care and connecting patients with health resources within the greater UCF community. One way this is accomplished is through collaboration with other UCF departments, such as audiology and psychology, to help with specific aspects of patients’ care. The result is a well-rounded, high-level academic resource for all of your healthcare needs.
Recently, the practice has added a wealth of new specialties, including allergy and immunology, sports medicine, gynecology, pulmonology, ophthalmology and orthopedic surgery, while also continuing to grow its primary care services for those age 16 and above.
We asked Dr. Maria Cannarozzi, the medical director for the practice, about the future growth of UCF Health and what these new services mean for local residents.
What can patients expect at UCF Health?
At UCF Health, we focus on putting the patient at the center of their care because we know that model of care produces healthier patients. Our providers proactively look at the patient’s health and offer in-house services that best support patients dealing with a wide variety of health conditions, from diabetes to depression. It’s a highly personalized model of care.
What’s in the works for the practice?
We are expanding to offer surgical services in areas like ophthalmology and orthopedics. We’ve also recently added allergy and immunology, and general gynecology services. We plan to add at least five new physicians to our team this year and continue to expand our core specialty service areas of cardiology, endocrinology, dermatology and rheumatology.
What does it mean to be a faculty practice?
At UCF Health, all of our doctors are faculty members at the UCF College of Medicine. This means that the same doctors who are providing your care are also teaching the next generation of doctors. We think this gives our physicians an edge, as they are constantly keeping up with the newest research and medical care breakthroughs, and they bring these advancements to their patients. It also helps our patients because we are constantly in “teacher mode.” We spend a lot of time educating our patients about their health and evidence-based ways to lower their risk factors.
