It’s almost time for tricks and treats on Halloween night. So what costumes will be trending this year?
Last month, Lyst, a global fashion search platform, partnered with Pinterest to review user data in an effort to predict what costumes we’ll be seeing at our front doors. The experts analyzed user activity, including searches and saves, as well as global trends over the past year. The data showed that consumers begin to search and plan for their costume as early as spring.
Here are their best guesses for the top 10 most popular costumes this Halloween in the order of popularity.
Tonya Harding
Earlier this year, the movie I, Tonya brought back ’80s hair and makeup along with cheesy performance outfits. All you need for this costume is a leotard, a crimper and a scrunchie.
A Riverdale Character
Trick-or-treaters are expected to pull a preppy look from this Netflix show based on the Archie comics. Betty and Jughead should be the most mimicked characters with Peter Pan collar tops, fluffy pink sweatshirts, beanies and fur-lined denim jackets.
A ’90s Icon
From Clueless to Kurt Cobain and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the Spice Girls, it’s all about ’90s nostalgia. Think brands like Sketchers and Tommy Hilfiger as well as pieces like halter tops, crop tops and chokers when putting together the look.
A Warrior of Wakanda
Princess Shuri of Black Panther, complete with half-moon braids, tribal markings and chunky gold cuffs, is expected to make many appearances. This character’s modern-day girl power vibe makes the costume fitting for trick-or-treaters and party goers.
A Flamingo
Not only is this an easy DIY costume idea, but you can also dress up something you already have in your closet, like a pretty pink co-ord set, romper or leggings.
Edna Mode
When The Incredibles 2 finally came back to the big screen, so did Edna Mode’s avant-garde look. You just need black round-frame glasses, an a-line dress and a black bob wig to match this resident fashion designer.
An Abba-Inspired Dancing Queen
Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again inspired this disco-era costume prediction. Dust off your white platform boots, fringe blouses and metallic accessories to play the part.
A Cosmic Fairy
Fashion drew inspiration from crystals and celestial bodies this year, so this prediction isn’t a stretch. Pull the look together with the shimmer of Milky Way makeup, crystal accessories and uniquely bright hair colors.
Frida Kahlo
This popular Mexican artist was the epitome of a strong woman, so it’s no wonder girls of all ages want to replicate her colorful spirit with off-the-shoulder, embroidered blouses and flower crowns this Halloween.
A Cow
You can blame Doja Cat and her viral song “Mooo!” for this one. A bonus is that any cow print clothing or accessories you use for the costume will get you free nuggets on the next Chik-fil-A Cow Appreciation Day.
