AdventHealth announced Tuesday in a press release the start of construction on the AdventHealth Cancer Institute at Winter Garden, a $43.2 million initiative aimed at expanding access to comprehensive cancer care in West Orange and South Lake counties.
The project underscores the organization’s commitment to addressing the increasing healthcare needs of the region’s rapidly growing population.
“As part of our commitment to meeting the evolving health care needs of our community, we are expanding access to comprehensive cancer services,” Kari Vargas, CEO of AdventHealth Winter Garden and the Northwest market said. “We recognize the importance of providing high-quality, whole-person cancer care close to home. The new space has been designed to prioritize patient comfort, dignity and healing, ensuring that every individual receives the care and support they need to feel whole.”
Rising Demand Drives Expansion
Recent projections from healthcare consulting firm Sg2 indicate a notable uptick in cancer care demand in Winter Garden by 2027. The area is expected to see an 11.7% increase in the need for advanced imaging, such as PET scans, and a 7.6% rise in demand for radiation therapy. These local trends align with national data pointing to a broader rise in cancer care needs, especially in gastrointestinal, women’s health, prostate, and hematologic oncology.
“The diagnosis of cancer is always devastating for patients and their families,” Dr. Mark A. Socinski, a thoracic medical oncologist and medical director of the AdventHealth Cancer Institute, said. “Our responsibility is to ensure access to state-of-the-art cancer care, delivered in the most convenient way possible, with therapies that can be lifesaving and life-prolonging.”
A State-of-the-Art Facility Designed for Whole-Person Care
The upcoming three-story, 60,000-square-foot cancer institute will be located on the campus of AdventHealth Winter Garden. The facility will offer a full spectrum of cancer treatments, including medical and radiation oncology, as well as advanced therapies such as immunotherapy and personalized, targeted treatments tailored to each patient’s genetic profile.
A multidisciplinary team of board-certified oncologists, oncology-trained nurses, and specialized nurse navigators will lead patient care, ensuring a coordinated and compassionate experience. The institute is also set to include the Eden Spa and Boutique, offering a range of supportive services and products for those coping with hair loss, lymphedema, and post-mastectomy recovery — highlighting AdventHealth’s focus on addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of cancer treatment.
Connecting Patients to Global Expertise
Patients at the Winter Garden facility will have access to AdventHealth’s nationally and globally recognized cancer specialists, bridging the gap between advanced clinical expertise and local care. The institute aims to provide high-quality treatment without requiring patients to travel far from home.
The building is being designed by architecture firm ESa, with Brasfield & Gorrie serving as the general contractor. Construction is scheduled to be completed by summer 2026.
