Food for Thought: Second Harvest Fights Hunger with Exclusive Tours

In honor of Hunger Action Month, Second Harvest Food Bank is hosting “Food for Thought” tours on Sept.14 and Sept.21. Tour participants will receive an in-person, behind the scenes look at the food bank’s warehouse distribution center. The warehouse is where Second Harvest works to help the one in seven Central Floridians experiencing food insecurity. That equates to a quarter of a million meals a day.

Attendees will also learn about the different programs the nonprofit maintains to help feed those experiencing food insecurity across Orange, Osceola, Lake, Seminole, Volusia and Brevard counties.

The goal of the tours is to raise awareness about food insecurity while inspiring the community to act on the hunger crisis. Tours are open to all community members at no cost.

Anyone interested in the Sept. 14 tour must register by Wednesday, September 7. Lunch will be offered to tour participants.

Anyone interested in the Sept. 21 tour must register by Wednesday, September 14. A snack box will be offered to tour participants.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida (SHFBCF) is a member of Feeding America – the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. SHFBCF secures and distributes food and grocery products to more than 500 local nonprofit feeding partners throughout Central Florida. In the past year, with the help of food and financial donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank has distributed enough food for 97 million meals to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes. In addition, Second Harvest’s 16-week culinary program teaches foodservice-based technical, life and employability skills to economically hard-pressed adults at no cost to them.
