From a Wooden Race Car to a Heartfelt Partnership: Sean Creech Motorsport and Camp Boggy Creek

The story begins not with a state-of-the-art race car, but with a small wooden car, lovingly painted by a child attending a Camp Boggy Creek weekend. This humble creation was gifted to a team from the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship during the 2023 Rolex 24 at Daytona. That small gesture ignited a meaningful partnership between Camp Boggy Creek and Sean Creech Motorsport (SCM), a racing team based in Jupiter, Florida.

Recently, SCM returned to Camp Boggy Creek to bring some racing excitement to the children, as well as to the dedicated volunteers and staff who provide a safe and joyful camp experience for kids with serious medical conditions. Founded in 1996 by actor Paul Newman and General Norman Schwarzkopf, Camp Boggy Creek serves children with a variety of serious illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, sickle cell anemia, and spina bifida. The camp offers a chance for these kids to simply be kids, enjoying activities in a supportive environment surrounded by others who understand their unique challenges. Open year-round, the camp hosts thousands of children and their families every year, offering all services free of charge.

Each camp session welcomes approximately 120 children, supported by a team of doctors, nurses, and a full-service medical center that ensures the safety and well-being of all campers, giving parents peace of mind while their children are away.

For SCM team owner Sean Creech, the decision to visit Camp Boggy Creek was easy. The team first visited the camp in July of last year, and it was clear that this would become an annual tradition.

“We’re so close to the camp so it’s easy for us to get up there,” said Creech. “We really appreciate the chance to go see the kids and to give them something different to do, and to talk about. And it’s great for our team as well – we really enjoyed our visit last year. The way the kids interacted with us, how happy they all were to be at camp, made such an impression on all of us. And of course, the kids were really interested in the car and were pretty excited when we fired it up. We definitely intend to make the trip every summer.”

This summer, 10 members of the SCM team—including Creech, the transporter driver, crew chief, several mechanics, and support staff—traveled to the camp, which was hosting its annual retreat for children with heart conditions. The 119 campers, aged 8 to 17, were split evenly between boys and girls.

The team brought along their No. 33 SCM Focal One Ligier JS P320, a car with an impressive track record, having won the 2022 Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and finished second in three consecutive Rolex 24 races (2021, 2022, and 2023). The team joined the campers for breakfast, witnessing firsthand the lively start to the campers’ day.

After breakfast, the campers dispersed to various activities like swimming and horseback riding. In small groups, they visited the team’s pop-up tent, where the race car was sheltered from Florida’s unpredictable weather. Crew members eagerly explained the car’s mechanics, its racing history, and even answered fun questions like “how long would it take to drive from here to Minnesota?”

These interactions left a lasting impact on crew chief Anthony Guida.

“One of the groups was girls around 10 or 12 years old,” said Guida. “They asked about 100 questions in a five-minute span, and I loved answering every one of them. One of the girls asked me how old I was, another asked if girls are involved in motorsport. After they decided that 36 wasn’t really old (though one girl said that her mom had just turned 40 and was upset about that!), they wanted to know more about how they could get into racing.

“In another group, a young boy around 13 wanted to know everything about how the car worked – he even wanted to see inside the transporter, to see how we carry everything. But it’s always an amazing time, going to the camp and interacting with the kids. To know there’s a camp like this, for kids dealing with extreme medical problems, somewhere that’s safe for them and where they are well cared for, it means so much to all of us and we want to help get the word out. The kids didn’t seem to have a care in the world while we were there, and that’s what this camp does for all these kids. It’s hard not to get emotional about it.”

The SCM team also delivered goodie bags to each camper’s cabin, containing a team hat, Michelin stickers (featuring the beloved Michelin Man), and wristbands with checkered flags that echoed the car’s stars-and-stripes livery. Just before lunch, the campers gathered outside the dining hall for the day’s highlight: Guida revving up the Ligier’s engine, its powerful roar met with cheers from campers and staff alike.

Camp Boggy Creek President and CEO Dan Jurman expressed his gratitude for the partnership with SCM.

“Having a valued partner like Sean Creech Motorsport is a true gift to Camp Boggy Creek,” said Jurman. “Our campers absolutely love it when the team comes out to visit the camp – it adds a whole new depth to their experience here and generates some huge smiles.

“At Camp Boggy Creek, we believe in spreading joy, kindness and love throughout Camp, and beyond. The SCM team helps us do that, both when they are here at Camp and when they’re on the track. They are exceptional human beings who understand the impact they have on these children. Thank you for helping us share the word about our very important mission! Our campers and our team can’t wait to see SCM here again soon.”

For Creech and his team, the visit created unforgettable memories, and they are already counting down the days until their 2025 visit.

“It was such a special day for all of us – every single crew member that wanted to come today,” said Creech. “To see all the smiles, answer all the questions, give the kids something to remember us by – and seeing how happy they were to see the Camp Boggy Creek decal on the car – makes us so happy. It was a great day.”
