An Assistance to Firefighters Fire Prevention and Safety Grant of nearly $115,000
was awarded to the Orange County Fire Rescue to assist with the enhancement of its home fire safety programs.
There is a need for updated smoke alarm systems and home safety visits and these funds will help the Orange County Fire Rescue to provide the extra care to the at-risk communities in Orange County. “Two-thirds of people who die in fires do so in environments where smoke alarms are either not present or not working,’ says Drozd.
“Our goal is to reduce home fires and related incidents for our at-risk populations including children, the aging, low-income communities and deaf/hard of hearing citizens.”
The program will provide in-home fire safety education, smoke alarm checks and installations in the targeted communities. Utilizing established partnerships during monthly door-to-door campaigns and through the use of Orange County’s 3-1-1 app will support the program.
