The city of Orlando is requesting $5 million from Orange County to assist in funding the long-awaited Pulse memorial, which will honor the 49 lives lost in the tragic 2016 mass shooting.

Approximately a month ago, a Pulse Advisory Committee finalized the design plans for the memorial, marking a significant step forward in the years-long effort to create a lasting tribute to the victims.

In an official memo dated March 10, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer confirmed that the city is prepared to allocate $7.5 million toward the memorial’s design and construction. However, the total estimated cost for the project is expected to reach $12 million.

“Since the tragedy, the city and county have continuously partnered to support the victims’ families and survivors and helped build community resilience. We hope that the County will continue that spirit of partnership as we work to realize an overdue memorial that properly honors the 49,” the memo states.

Orange County officials acknowledged the funding request, noting that final approval must come from the Board of County Commissioners. However, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings has expressed his support for the proposal.

To advance the project, the city issued a request for bids earlier this month to identify a design-build firm capable of constructing the permanent memorial. The project is slated to break ground in 2026, with completion anticipated in the latter half of 2027.

Interested firms are invited to submit their proposals by 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 29.
