More than 200 volunteers recently built a playground for thousands of child domestic abuse survivors in less than eight hours to give them the opportunity to get the safe, balanced and active play they need to thrive.
Volunteers from Harbor House of Central Florida and Disney, along with area residents and organizers from KaBOOM!, transformed an empty lot at the new Morgan & Morgan Home – a Safe Haven for Families on Harbor House of Central Florida’s campus into a place for kids. The design incorporated ideas from children’s drawings created at a special event in March.
“Each year, nearly 600 children seek shelter at our campus with their families, as they safely escape domestic violence,” intern CEO of Harbor House of Central Florida, Ellen Siler, says. “As our new home is being built to provide light and hope and to restore dignity to those trying to rebuilt their lives from this experience, we know that the same will happen for the children when they lay their eyes on this amazing playground. The children will be able to better heal, be free, laugh, learn and have fun.”
