Florida’s Holiday Hustle: Sunshine State Ranks Second in Last-Minute Christmas Shopping

As the holiday season approaches, shoppers across the United States are gearing up to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones. However, many are waiting until the last minute to make their purchases. New research from NonGamStopBets has revealed that certain states are more prone to procrastinating when it comes to Christmas shopping, and Florida ranks second in the nation for last-minute holiday shoppers.

The Rise of December Shopping

According to the study, which analyzed holiday shopping search trends from October to December over the past three years (2021-2023), Florida is among the states where the majority of holiday shopping activity occurs in December. In fact, 61.10% of Florida’s holiday-related searches take place during the final month of the year, with an average of 1,887 gift-related searches per 100,000 residents.

This trend is indicative of a larger pattern seen in many states across the U.S. – an increasing reliance on last-minute shopping as Christmas draws near. Californians are the most notorious for waiting until the eleventh hour, with 61.58% of their holiday searches concentrated in December, but Florida isn’t far behind.

The Last-Minute Gift Rush: A Focus on Women

While many shoppers delay their holiday purchases, the types of gifts they are searching for are also revealing. The most common last-minute search term across several states, including Florida, is “gifts for women,” followed closely by “Christmas gifts for mom.” In Florida, “Christmas gifts for mom” ranks among the top five last-minute searches, with an average of 14,900 monthly searches in December.

This suggests that many Floridians are scrambling to find the perfect present for their mothers at the last minute, possibly reflecting indecision or a desire to find something truly meaningful as the holiday season approaches.

In neighboring California, “gift for women” was the second most searched term, with an impressive 29,300 searches per month, further underscoring the trend of searching for female-centric gifts during the final weeks before Christmas.

Why the Procrastination?

So, why do states like Florida, California, and others experience such a surge in last-minute holiday shopping? One possible explanation is the fast-paced lifestyles common in these regions. Whether it’s the hustle and bustle of big cities like Los Angeles and New York, or the laid-back yet busy nature of Florida’s beach towns, many people simply put off holiday shopping until they can’t delay it any longer.

Paul Hayward, CEO of NonGamStopBets, said procrastination could also be tied to a variety of factors, including competing priorities and a lack of time to plan.

“Holiday shopping can be stressful, especially with busy schedules and so many other things to juggle in life,” Hayward said. “For many, waiting until December might feel like the best option, even though it can lead to added pressure as Christmas approaches.”

Other States in the Holiday Rush

Florida may be in second place, but it’s far from alone in its last-minute shopping habits. Nevada, New Jersey, and Arizona all make the top five, each seeing over 60% of their holiday shopping searches in December. New Jersey, for instance, recorded 60.33% of its holiday-related searches in December, with “gifts for mom” again topping the list.

In states like Georgia and Colorado, the trend is also clear – procrastination is real. Georgia, in particular, has an impressive 58.86% of its holiday shopping searches occurring in December, with “Christmas gifts for mom” making a significant impact on the search volume.

Tips for Avoiding the Last-Minute Rush

While Florida and other states may embrace the thrill of last-minute shopping, experts suggest that planning ahead can lead to a less stressful and more enjoyable holiday season. Paul Hayward recommends starting your gift list well in advance, setting weekly purchasing goals, and taking advantage of early sales like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

By spreading out your purchases and avoiding the last-minute rush, you can manage your budget more effectively and avoid the anxiety of scrambling to find gifts in December. Hayward also suggests keeping a small stockpile of versatile gifts, like gift cards or bath sets, that can be used for unexpected situations.

Conclusion

Florida’s ranking as the second state with the highest proportion of last-minute Christmas shopping is a testament to the pressures of modern life and the habit of procrastination. However, it also highlights the importance of thoughtful gift-giving, with a strong focus on finding the perfect present for the women in our lives. Whether you’re in Florida, California, or any other state, there are plenty of ways to make your holiday shopping less stressful—just remember to plan ahead and stay organized as the holiday season approaches.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid the last-minute shopping scramble and enjoy a more relaxed and enjoyable holiday season.
