High School Spotlight: Bishop Moore lacrosse drops back-to-back games

Friday: Bishop Moore 9, Winter Park 10

A short trip to cross-town rival, the Winter Park Wildcats, Friday night was the first regular season road game for Bishop Moore’s varsity lacrosse team this season. In a game that was delayed nearly an hour prior to the start due to lightning, it was the Wildcats who provided the thunder on the field.

Although the halftime score saw the Hornets (2-3) leading 6-5, it was Winter Park’s astonishing 33 first half shots (9 on goal) that kept them close with one of the area’s best teams. The Wildcats shooting barrage subsided some in the second half, however, they converted on five of their eight shots on goal. That was good enough to clip the Hornets by a final score of 10-9.

After a relatively clean first half the Hornets were whistled for five second half penalties totaling four minutes. The Wildcats converted on two of their five extra man opportunities and killed the Hornets only second half extra man opportunity after a penalty of their own in the fourth quarter.

Trailing by one goal with just under one minute to play, the game was again delayed due to lightning.

The Hornets also lost senior midfielder, Dillon Worrell (foot), and junior attackman, R.J. Sanfilippo (knee), to injury during the contest. Worrell is currently third on the team with four assists, while Sanfilippo is second on the team with seven goals this season. Both players were held out of Saturday’s game and their statuses remain questionable for the remainder of the season.

Saturday: The Lovett School 14, Bishop Moore 10

The unusually late finish Friday night perhaps allowed fatigue to play a factor in Saturday afternoon’s outcome vs. The Lovett School (Atlanta, Georgia). The Lions, who were coming off a Friday evening overtime win of their own against Lake Highland, used a second half surge to propel themselves to a 14-10 win.

On the stat sheet, it was the Hornets who had more shot attempts on goal, fielded more ground balls, caused more turnovers and had less penalties than the Lions – but goalies, Avery Douglas and Davison Oser combined for just nine saves on Lovett’s 23 shots on goal.

Senior attackman, Jake Kiefer added two goals, bringing his season total to a team-leading 17 through five games. Kiefer has scored four or more goals in three games this season.

The Hornets face another challenging three-game lacrosse week ahead. On Tuesday, they’ll host in-conference opponent, Olympia, before traveling to in-conference opponent, Dr. Phillips, on Wednesday. The Hornets remain 1-0 in conference after last week’s win against the Edgewater Eagles. They’ll finish the week with a road trip to The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach on Friday.
