U.S. Issues Warning for Travelers to the Bahamas Amid Crime and Safety Concerns

The Bahamas: A Popular Cruise Destination with Safety Advisories

Every year, millions of travelers set sail from Florida on cruise vacations, with nearly all itineraries including at least one stop in the Bahamas. While Nassau—the capital of the Bahamas—is often the most recognized city, the nation consists of over 700 islands and cays, many of which are key stops for major cruise lines.

Cruise ships regularly visit multiple destinations within the Bahamas. Nassau, capable of accommodating up to seven ships simultaneously, is among the most frequented ports. However, it is not the only option for visitors. Freeport also serves as a popular cruise stop, and major cruise lines, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian, have developed private island destinations in the region. Carnival’s upcoming Celebration Key near Freeport, Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay are all part of the Bahamas’ cruise tourism infrastructure.

Despite its popularity as a travel destination, the entire nation is currently under an updated Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory from the U.S. Department of State due to concerns over crime and water-related safety risks.

Crime and Safety Concerns in the Bahamas

The State Department’s advisory highlights risks associated with violent crime, particularly in Nassau and Freeport.

“Violent crime—like armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults—can occur anywhere in The Bahamas. Most crime occurs in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. Stay alert in the ‘Over the Hill’ area in Nassau, south of Shirley Street, where gangs have killed residents,” the warning states.

Cruise passengers and other travelers are urged to remain cautious when venturing beyond well-populated areas and to stay in groups when exploring destinations independently.

Watercraft and Boating Risks

Many cruise passengers participate in water-based activities, including jet skiing and boating. However, the State Department’s advisory warns of risks associated with renting personal watercraft from independent operators, citing safety concerns and prior incidents of sexual assault involving jet ski operators.

  • Boating is not well regulated, and there have been reports of injuries and fatalities.

  • Some watercraft operators lack proper licensing or insurance.

  • Operators may ignore weather forecasts, increasing the risk of accidents.

  • U.S. government employees are prohibited from using jet skis rented from independent vendors on New Providence and Paradise Island.

Beach Safety: What Cruise Passengers Should Know

In addition to crime concerns, the advisory also highlights beach safety risks, particularly in Nassau.

  • Never swim alone, and be cautious of jet skis and other watercraft operating near the shore.

  • Sexual assaults have occurred on and near downtown Nassau beaches, including in public restrooms.

  • Be realistic about your swimming abilities and physical fitness.

  • Snorkeling can be dangerous—some tourists have died after overestimating their endurance.

  • Shark attacks have occurred, leading to serious injuries and fatalities.

  • Pay attention to weather and water conditions and follow local safety alerts.

How Cruise Passengers Can Stay Safe

While these warnings may sound alarming, they should not deter travelers from visiting the Bahamas. Cruise passengers can still enjoy the islands by taking proper precautions.

  • Stick to well-populated areas, especially when exploring Nassau and Freeport.

  • Consider cruise line-sponsored excursions, which tend to offer more security.

  • If exploring independently, travel in groups and avoid secluded areas.

  • At the beach, secure your valuables, and consider a waterproof phone holder for your ID, cash, and credit cards.

While the Bahamas remains a popular and beautiful destination, awareness and caution are key to a safe visit. Travelers should stay informed, plan accordingly, and take steps to minimize risks while enjoying their cruise vacation.
