In a major announcement that merges entertainment and economic development, Universal Destinations & Experiences has revealed plans to build its first-ever European theme park and resort in the United Kingdom. The project marks a significant milestone for the entertainment giant, known for its immersive attractions and globally acclaimed movie-themed parks.

Universal Expands to the U.K.

Set to break ground in 2026, the new Universal theme park will be located just outside London in Bedford, a town approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the capital. The site — a 476-acre (1.93 square kilometers) former brickyard — is expected to be transformed into a sprawling resort complex by 2031.

The strategic location places the park near key transport links, including a major railway line and Luton Airport, which is currently undergoing expansion. These connections are expected to make the resort easily accessible for both domestic and international visitors.

Economic Boost and Job Creation

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the initiative, emphasizing the substantial economic benefits it could bring to the region. He highlighted the potential for 28,000 new jobs and called the project a source of “opportunity, growth, and of course, joy to Britain.”

This announcement comes as part of a broader push to boost tourism, investment, and infrastructure in the U.K.

What to Expect at the New Universal Park

While Universal has yet to reveal specific attractions for the Bedford location, the company is renowned for its blockbuster-themed experiences. Existing parks around the world feature rides and interactive zones inspired by hit franchises like:

  • Harry Potter (in partnership with Warner Bros.)

  • Jurassic Park

  • Minions

  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

  • Kung Fu Panda

  • Fast & Furious

Given Universal’s ongoing collaboration with Warner Bros., fans speculate that elements of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter may be part of the park, especially with the new location being only 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London in Watford.

The project’s first phase is expected to include a 500-room hotel, setting the foundation for a full-scale resort experience.

A Global Entertainment Leader

Universal, a division of Comcast Corporation, currently operates five major entertainment and resort complexes in:

  • Orlando, Florida

  • Los Angeles, California

  • Osaka, Japan

  • Beijing, China

  • Sentosa, Singapore

The U.K. development will be Universal’s sixth global location and its first in Europe, signaling the company’s continued international growth and commitment to offering world-class entertainment destinations.
