In a long-awaited change, Walt Disney World is set to operate both of its iconic water parks—Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon—simultaneously for the first time since 2019. The resort announced on April 1 that from May 21 through September 7, guests will have access to both parks, marking a significant shift from the alternating schedule that had been in place since the global pandemic.
A Long-Awaited Return to Normal
Before the pandemic, it was common for both water parks to be open at the same time, especially during peak summer months. However, since Disney World’s reopening, only one water park has been available at any given time. Now, with summer on the horizon and temperatures soaring in Florida, Disney is finally ready to bring back full-scale water park operations.
Currently, Typhoon Lagoon is closed for refurbishment, and Blizzard Beach will follow suit with its own brief maintenance closure starting May 1. During this period, neither park will be open. But when May 21 arrives, guests can look forward to a fully operational, two-park water experience for the first time in nearly six years.
Why the Sudden Change?
While the return of both water parks is exciting for guests, the decision is likely a strategic one. Last year, Disney introduced a perk granting all guests staying at Disney World resort hotels free access to a water park on their check-in day. Given Florida’s notoriously hot and humid summers, this benefit has proven popular, increasing demand for water park access.
With more visitors looking to cool off, it appears that one water park alone wouldn’t be sufficient to accommodate the crowds. By opening both parks, Disney ensures a better guest experience while also maximizing capacity during the busiest season of the year.
A Temporary or Permanent Change?
The announcement specifies that both parks will remain open through September 7, hinting that one may close again on September 8. If past trends hold, Blizzard Beach may be the one to shut down, returning to the alternating schedule Disney has used in recent years.
The bigger question is whether this summer’s dual park opening signals a long-term shift or if it’s simply a temporary response to increased demand. If Disney sees continued success with this setup, it’s possible that both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon will be open together more frequently in the future.
For now, guests can look forward to an action-packed summer with double the opportunities to splash, slide, and soak up the sun at Disney World’s beloved water parks.
